Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena

In Piazza della Maddalena is the portico of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, a 16th-17th-century reconstruction of an earlier building of worship already dedicated to the saint and of which there are traces dating back to 1150. While the structure is a fine example of Baroque by Vannone, the decoration is predominantly 18th century: the frescoes in the vaults are mostly the work of Galeotti and his pupil Betti.  The church gives its name to the Maddalena quarter, a district in the historical centre of Genoa, formerly one of the “sestieri” (neighbourhoods) into which the city was divided, bordered to the east by that of Molo, to the west by that of Prè and to the north by that of San Vincenzo.
