Palazzo Gio. Battista Spinola

Palazzo Gio. Battista Spinola

Built around 1563 on commission of the brothers Andrea and Gio. Batta, the palace belonging to the Spinola family of the branch of Vergagni as third palace of the family in Strada Nuova, passed to the Doria, the current holders, in 1723.

The mighty cubic volume looks imposing on the street, while the spatial organization of the ground floor is based on the optical telescope, which puts in direct visual communication the garden with the atrium, passing through the courtyard, from which it is separated through a colonnaded diaphragm that runs all around.

The naval bombardment ordered by the Sun King in 1684 caused considerable damage to the building, which saw the reconstruction of the facade and a general reconstruction of its spaces. Inside there are fresco decorations, made by Andrea Semino, totally dedicated to the enterprises of the Spinola family.

In the vault of one of the side living rooms are visible evidence of Luca Cambiaso. Even today the palace houses a remarkable picture gallery, although much less rich than in the past, with valuable examples of Venetian and Genoese school between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
