Palazzo Antoniotto Cattaneo (Palazzo Belimbau)

Palazzo Antoniotto Cattaneo (Palazzo Belimbau) - affreschi di Lazzaro Tavarone

The current appearance of the palace, donated in 1999 by the Belimbau family, the last owners, to the University of Genoa, is the result of a series of interventions that have affected its architectural and decorative aspects both inside and out.

Various owners lived in the building, and from the mid-17th century the residence was mainly used for renting until most of the 18th century. Towards the end of the 18th century, the residence passed to the Cambiaso family, who renovated the façade and some of the interior spaces, often entrusting the work to the Ticino architect Giovanni Battista Pellegrini.

In the flat on the piano nobile, overlooking the Piazza della Nunziata, it is possible to admire Lazzaro Tavarone's extraordinary frescoed illusionist decoration from around 1610, an extraordinary setting for the narration of Christopher Columbus' First Voyage, which is developed in the central panel of the vault and in the lunettes.
