Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno

Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno

“One of the wonders of the world”. With these words the great Ernest Hemingway described the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, a real open-air museum, today considered one of the most important and fascinating in Europe.

Since its birth, it was a tourist attraction for celebrities and noble people from all around the world. Among them we can find: the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, writers such as Guy De Maupassant, Ernest Hemingway and Mark Twain, the Empress Elizabeth “Sissi” of Austria, and singers such as Peter Hook, bass player of Joy Division, who visited the Appiani grave in 2015, which was used as the cover of the “Closer” album.

Many representatives of the Genoese middle-class and many other inhabitants of the city are buried in Staglieno Genova, but also illustrious foreigners who visited the city of Genoa: Constance Mary Lloyd Wilde (the wife of Oscar Wilde), Nino Bixio, Enrico Alberto d’Albertis, Govi, Giuseppe Mazzini, Fabrizio De André, Edoardo Sanguineti, Raffaele Rubattino, Gian Carlo Di Negro, and many others.

“Our last sight was the cemetery, and we shall continue to remember it after we shall have forgotten the palaces”. (Mark Twain)

It was designed by architect Carlo Barabino in 1835 and, after his death, by Giovanni Battista Resasco, making it a representation of the Genoese 19th century.

There is a Pantheon (or Cappella dei Suffragi), galleries and colonnades with hundreds of monuments, which testify the extraordinary art of the 19th and 20th century in Liguria, and the Boschetto Irregolare, inspired by Romantic gardens patterns, where you can find the graves of the Thousand and other heroes of the Risorgimento.

Discover this itinerary by admiring the fascinating and majestic sculptures and the tree lined alleys.

It is possible to discover the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno with guided tours.
