The museum documents Liguria's artistic activities and its relationship to Italy and to the world in an exhibition of over 350 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and engravings, dating from the start of the 19th century to today, and largely resulting from a targeted acquisitions campaign carried out by the City of Genoa between 1912 and 1950 at the most important Italian exhibitions, including the Venice Bienniale, mostre sindacali (union exhibitions), and the Rome Quadriennale.

In this historic villa, reopened in 2004 following a major restoration and with the addition of several paintings and valuable furnishings by Alberto Issel and Duilio Cambellotti belonging to Wolfson Collection, visitors can now admire works by Rayper, Luxoro, Cabianca, Varni, Barabino, Merello, Nomellini, Baroni, Messina, Martini, De Pisis, Casorati, Carena, Ferrazzi, Depero, Fillia, Survage, Mafai, Capogrossi, Cagli, Guttuso, Sassu, and Zao Wou-Ki.
