Eurocities Economic Development Forum 2015
Transforming cities’ economy: from industrial to smart jobs
The focus of the meeting is on:
- how cities have developed economic strategies to move from mainly manufacturing industries to innovative and sustainable sectors
- how cities support the creation of start-up and SMEs and job creation in innovative and sustainable sectors such as energy and telecommunications, creative industries and smart mobility.
To diversify their economies, cities have to support innovation at all levels, creating a favourable entrepreneurial environment while at the same time addressing employment, education and social issues.
Cities also develop partnerships with the local economy, universities, research centres and businesses to support job creation. Using a collective approach by bringing partners together and setting up local projects makes it possible to test new initiatives with local SMEs and businesses.
Local authorities also help people to start their businesses, be it in providing space and/or financial incentives, equip them with the right entrepreneurial/technical skills, mentoring, coaching and networking. They also support young businesses on their way to be sustainable and grow.
