The current urban asset of the city extends for 30 kilometers on the coast and was designed with the “Great Genova” project in 1926, when the city borders where redefined and extended, including many areas and independent municipalities: to the west the county seat  extends up to the district of Voltri and to the east to the district of Nervi, and towards the hills it goes up to Pontedecimo and Struppa.

Going from one district to another you can feel the atmosphere of different cultures and independet stories, that still preserve a proud identity: on the west coast you can find Voltri and its focaccia with polenta flour, Pra’, the basil and pesto “capital”, Sestri Ponente, Cornigliano and Sampierdarena, while to the east there are the Foce, the sunny areas of Quarto, Quinto, Sturla and Nervi with magnificent parks, or the Corso Italia promenade and Boccadasse, a jewel that preserves the aspect of a small village, where you can taste an ice cream strolling on the beach or among the typical fishermen boats. In the hinterland there are some densely populated districts such as Certosa and Rivarolo, Bolzaneto and Pontedecimo in the Polcevera Valley and Marassi, San Fruttuoso, Staglieno with one of the most fascinating monumental cemetery of Europe and Struppa in the Bisagno Valley.

Genoa is also famous for its hills: the city climbs up to Carignano, Castelletto and Albaro, residential areas of the city centre with many well maintained green areas with small alleys that lead to the sea, called "creuze", lifts and funicolars that descend to the Historic Centre, made of narrow alleys, the famous “caruggi”, that you can find in the heart of the medieval city as tangible historic heritage. Finally you will find the Porto Antico, where you can live and breathe the soul of a city full of hidden wonders and fascinating contradictions.
