Palazzo Ducale hosts from July 4  to November 1 2020 the exhibition Obey fidelity. The art of Shepard Fairey.

A visual journey that crosses four thematic points - Woman, Environment, Peace, Culture - recreating at Palazzo Ducale an ideal walk in the metropolitan night. The works on display are organic parts of the same family, an urban conversation between militant messages, pacifist visions, sympathetic passions. Obey stimulates reflections on humanitarian issues, on existential passages, on social utopias, on the values of justice above the laws.

The exposition, curated by Gianluca Marziani and Stefano Antonelli, produced and organized by MetaMorfosi in collaboration with "Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura", and with the support of the "Camera di Commercio" of Genua, promoted by the Municipality of Genua and Liguria Region, offers the opportunity to learn about the work of one of the most famous street artists in the world, whose fame is linked to the realization of the poster with the stylized four-color image of Barack Obama, titled Hope, and that became in 2008 the icon of the electoral campaign of the future President of The United States of America.

Thanks to the works on display by the American artist Shepard Fairey, codenamed Obey, which also appears in Banksy’s documentary on urban art Exit Through the Gift Shop we are introduced to his paper universe with an inimitable style.

Among the works on display there are some iconic images, such as Hope, in which Obey depicted in 2008 the future President of the USA Barak Obama.  Hope became so famous that it joined the permanent collection of the National Gallery in Washington and it was considered by Peter Schjeldah, art critic of the New Yorker, "the most effective American political illustration since Uncle Sam’s time".

In the exhibition there are series of serigraphs and lithographs from private collections that make Obey the fluid prototype of the new political artist, because he understood that the burning themes must be addressed with symbols and visual intelligence. These include We the people - defend Dignity, a political graphic in response to the xenophobic, racist and anti-immigrant sentiment promoted by the current US administration, which is part of a series of 3 portraits for the campaign "We the People", published by Amplifier Art on January 21 of 2017, in conjunction with the Women’s March, the largest single-day protest in US history. But  the references to the actual world are continuous in the artist's art works. Last among these references is Angel of Hope and Strength, where a nurse with celestial wings and a torch in her hand, evokes the heroes who fought the covid-19 epidemic. “Obey - explains curator Stefano Antonelli - creates viral and replicable symbols, producers of icons that raise the threshold of attention, that give political messages metaphorical and shared way”.

This is the case, for example, of Angela Davis, fundamental figure for the African-American movement of the seventies, which becomes one of the favorite subjects of Shepard Fairey. Obey portrayed her several times, and one of these images appears in the exhibition, helping to create the myth of African-American woman, symbol of both feminism and racial equality.
