Maritime Republic of Genoa, fourteenth century: a tale of intrigues, poisonings, hatred, curses and reconciliation takes place.
This complex plot torments Verdi for years. The first version, based on a libretto by Piave, dates back to 1857. The definitive revision was made in 1881, on verses by Arrigo Boito.
The result is particular: an opera that does not include captivating melodies and focuses more on emotional and psychological parts.
A work with a unique timbre and an expressive coherence that keeps it united from the first to the last note (like Otello and Falstaff).
