LIGHTING TREE IN PIAZZA DE FERRARI
On Sunday 8 December, in the late afternoon, the traditional Christmas Tree lighting ceremony returns to Piazza De Ferrari, kicking off a season of Christmas festivities full of events.
Once again this year the tree is donated to the city by the Aveto Regional Natural Park. The tree, about 20 meters high, comes from a forest managed the Park and its felling is part of the operations to improve and redevelop the woods of the protected area: therefore, so the no tree is “sacrificed” for the Genoese Christmas.
The illuination will be accompanied by a rich program of Christmas-themed initiatives and entertainment.
In December Genoa is brightened by traditional colours: the Christmas markets liven up the city during the whole holiday season offering a range of items from the typical products of the Ligurian tradition to objects of the finest craftsmanship.
Here is a brief summary of some of the markets, but they will be much more!
In Piazza Matteotti, from December 1st to 24th there is the "Christmas Market", with many Christmas and other bargains.
As per tradition, the historic Christmas "Small Craft Market" returns to Piazza Campetto, in the historic center of Genoa: every day, from 8 to 24 December. On the stalls, unique objects made by hand: clothes, bags, jewellery, scarves, soaps, illustrations, decorative objects and much more.
In Piazza Piccapietra, from 1 to 22 December, music, tradition, food, comedy, entertainment and, above all, solidarity with the annual San Nicola Market: the only one in Italy run by a non-profit organization, the market marries history and charity offering quality products from a kaleidoscope of exhibitors, craft shops and associations.

The appointment with the Confeugo ceremony returns once again on Saturday 21 December, once again recalling an ancient tradition of the Republic of Genoa, documented from the XIV century, but probably more ancient.
On the occasion of Christmas, and of the imminent beginning of a new year, the people paid tribute to the highest authorities of the Republic, presenting a laurel trunk decorated with white and red ribbons. Representing the population, the gift was given by the Abbot of the People (traditionally the representative of the Val Bisagno) to the Doge. In front of Palazzo Ducale, which was reached through a procession that passed through what is now Via San Vincenzo, Via Porta d'Archi, vico Dritto Ponticello and Porta Sant'Andrea, the Abbot addressed the Doge by saying the following sthe Genoese phrases of mutual greeeting: "Ben trovòu messê ro Duxe ” and the Doge replied “ Ben vegnûo messê l'Abbòu ”.
The trunk was then burned, always as a good omen, and those present tried to bring home an ember, as a kind of “amulet”.
From 26 December 2019 to 6 January 2020 Circumnavigando returns to Genoa, the International Circus and Theatre Festival reaches its nineteenth edition this year. Ever more crazy and addictive, this year it has the title of “Fool immersion” and will see, as every year, entertain and involve the public with unmissable shows during the Christmas holidays.
