On the marvelous stage of the most prestigious theather in Genoa, the Carlo Felice Theatre, the wonderful Opera show "Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci" by the great Ruggero Leoncavallo is put on stage from the 24th to the 30th of May.
Inspired by a novel by Giovanni Verga, the story is set in a realistic Sicilian village of the late '800, and tells about passion, jealousy, betrayal, ending with a terrible crime of honor.
On May 17, 1890 Cavalleria rusticana debuts for the first time at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. Pietro Mascagni was amazed by its success, not only because he won a famous competition organized by the Sonzogno publishing house, but also for the appreciation of the audience. Cavalleria was exactly what the people needed: not a fake historical reconstruction set in a distant and inaccessible court, but a true story, set in a social context as real as the one where people actually live, enriched with a simple and genuine music.
