From June 21st to October 6th, 2019, Palazzo Ducale will have the photographic exhibition named “Inge Morath, La vita. Fotografia”, in the Loggia degli Abati. Palazzo Ducale will host the first big Italian retrospective of Inge Morath.
Inge Morath’s work express her relationship, her passion and her need towards art. Speaking of which, she declared “Photography is primarily a personal issue: searching for an inner truth… is a strange phenomenon… You trust your eye, but you can’t avoid baring your soul”.
A relationship which has matured through the years thanks to experiences and meetings, and also has become a main part of this woman’s life: Inge Morath has succeed in a discipline which in the past years was strictly for men, by using her courage and determination.
During her career she made photo reportages in Spain, Italy, Middle East, America, Russia and China.
She took those trips seriously, by studying language, traditions and culture of each country she had to visit. She spoke fluently German, English, French, Spanish, Rumanian, Russian and Mandarin. She was interested in both normal people and public figures, especially in sharing something intimate of each soul.
Her photography style is based on humanistic ideals coming from the Second World War, but also on the decisive moment, as described by Cartier-Bresson.
Inge Morath’s photos reflect her sensibility and her private life: “Photography is primarily a personal issue: searching for an inner truth.”
Having studied languages in Berlin, Inge Morath started working as translator and journalist: she made texts for her friend Ernst Haas, photo reporter. For this reason she is invited by Robert Capa to become a member of the Magnum agency in 1953, as editor and researcher. From 1953 to 1955 Morath is also the assistant of Henri Cartier-Bresson.
During the following years she travels all over Europe, North Africa and Middle East.
Between her most popular subjects there are those representing important people of the 20th century, like Henri Moore, Pablo Picasso, André Malraux, Doris Lessing, Marilyn Monroe, Gloria Vanderbilt e Fidel Castro.
Inge Morath dies in New York in January 30th, 2002.
